So, I'm sure all of you have heard of the new legislation that is trying to be passed in the government lately. If you haven't, these bills are H.R. 3261 Stop Online Anti Piracy Act (SOPA; introduced by R. Lamar Smith) and S. 968 Prevent Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 (PROTECT IP; PIPA; introduced by D. Patrick Leahy). These acts working together are supposed to protect commercial industry against copyright infringement via the Internet. Although this is an honorable task, this is not the underlying purpose here. The government is trying to censor our Internet! These bills are extremely broad and does not differentiate enough between commercial industry and the everyday people. What does this mean for you? Not only could popular websites that host millions of peoples' ideas and possibly millions of copyright infringements (e.g. your friend posting a video of them singing a song!), such as Facebook, YouTube, etc., could be forced to be taken down from the Internet, but you could be put under law suit and a maximum of five years in federal prison. On top of the fact, foreign websites could be removed from search engines around the web. The fact that these bills are so broad means that the government can order sites to be removed from the web that they don't want live using loopholes left in the bill and coincidences in the website. These are censorship bills.

So what can you do to help? Call your local representatives and ask them to vote no on this bill. There is already much support to reject these bills; even the U.S. president said he doesn't support the bill. (However, he has not promised to veto the bill as of yet.) I suggest you join Save the Internet; you can start by sending this letter to your local representative.

Thanks for your help!

I really, really doubt that it's actually gonna happen. I'm sure that the government can pick up on all the protesting, it'd be unethical to actually go through with it, and I think Obama said he's not supporting the bill. Even though he's not the congress, he has a pretty big say in it. And I'd be pissed if they actually did. lol I don't see why they wanted to start this bill in the first place.
